School, class: Kaunas Jonas Jablonskis Gymnasium, 1st ki grade.
Type of lesson: Combined lesson. Purpose of the lesson: Repeating the part of the learned cheer-leading dance combination, learning and performing the rest of the dance during the physical education lesson.
Pedagogical situation presentation: During the physical education class, the girls of the class had a dance class. It was held in an assembly hall with selected girls. A warm-up was performed with the students, and the learned dance combination of the cheer-leading team was repeated. After that, the dance was fully learned and the students had to perform it without help. The analysis is about the stereotypes related to this dance style that were discussed with the students.
SITUATION ANALYSIS
SITUATION STRENGTHS DISCUSSING STEREOTYPES ASSOCIATED WITH DANCE WITH THE STUDENTS INTRODUCES THEM TO ATTITUDES ABOUT DANCERS AND HOW THEY CAN HELP CHANGE THEM. WHILE THE CHEER-LEADING TEAM PERFORMS, THEY MAY EXPERIENCE SEXUALIZATION, POSSIBLE HARASSMENT, AND SIMILAR THREATS. EMPHASIZING THAT CHEER-LEADING DANCE IS A COMBINATION OF SPORTS AND DANCE, AND THEIR GOAL AS DANCERS IS TO MOTIVATE THE ATHLETES AND THEIR FANS, THE STUDENTS ARE TAUGHT TO FOCUS ON DEVELOPING THEIR ABILITIES, DEVELOPING CONFIDENCE AND SELF-RESPECT. THIS WAY, THEY WILL NOT ONLY LEARN TO APPRECIATE THEMSELVES AS PERSONALITIES, BUT ALSO CONTRIBUTE TO FORMING A RESPECTFUL ATTITUDE TO THE PROFESSION OF DANCERS AND THEIR PLACE IN THE HIGH SCHOOL COMMUNITY.
WEAKNESSES OF THE SITUATION
STUDENTS MAY REACT NEGATIVELY TO TOPIC ANALYSIS IF THE TEACHER DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO PROPERLY PRESENT THE TOPIC AND MODERATE THE DISCUSSION.
POSSIBILITIES OF THE SITUATION
BY ANALYZING THE STEREOTYPES RELATED TO DANCE, THE STUDENTS WILL GAIN A WIDER AND MORE RESPECTFUL VIEW OF THIS FIELD OF ART. BY SHARING THEIR THOUGHTS, THEY WILL TRANSMIT THIS ATTITUDE TO OTHERS AND CONTRIBUTE TO FORMING A POSITIVE ATTITUDE TOWARDS DANCE AND CHANGING STEREOTYPES.
SITUATION THREATS THE ANALYSIS OF THE TOPIC MAY BE ACCEPTED NEGATIVELY BY THE STUDENTS, DISTORTING THE THOUGHTS IN EXAMINATION OR REJECTING A CHANGE OF ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE DANCERS. IF THEY FIND THE TOPIC UNACCEPTABLE OR DISTURBING, THEY CAN TRANSFER THEIR DISSATISFACTION TO OTHER STUDENTS OR PARENTS, WHO CAN CONTACT THE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION ABOUT INAPPROPRIATE TOPIC ANALYSIS DURING THE LESSONS. THIS MAY CREATE A THREAT TO THE TEACHER'S AUTHORITY OR EVEN THE WORKPLACE.
SITUATION REFLECTION Conversations about sensitive topics are important in order to form the value system of students, to change attitudes towards prevailing stereotypes. In the world of dance, women often face unpleasant male attention and a sexualized approach to their profession. Therefore, it is important to familiarize amateur dancers with this and teach them to look at dance as a way to reveal their talents, abilities and individuality. Cheer-leading dances are often associated with the sexy image of girls, the desire to show off their physical beauty and attract men's attention. Therefore, it is necessary to form an awareness that it is a combination of sports and dance, which requires a lot of physical abilities, energy, concentration and self-confidence. This role is assumed by the teacher, who must be able to analyze this topic with the students adequately, so as not to make them feel uncomfortable. At the same time, by shaping their values, the teacher helps students gain confidence in expressing their thoughts, which can be useful in their interpersonal relationships and in forming a rational approach to dance, its learning and performance. By forming the students' value base, it is possible to fundamentally change the attitude towards dance, its perception and evaluation. In this way, the attitude to dance can be reformed in the community itself, which can encourage to look at dance as a personal improvement and maturation, and not just as a pleasant pastime.
