Integrating dance into a physical education lesson

Date: 2022-10-09

School, class: Kaunas Jonas Jablonskis Gymnasium, 1st ki grade. Type of lesson: Lesson of learning new knowledge. Purpose of the lesson: Integrating dance into the physical education lesson. Pedagogical situation presentation: During the physical education lesson, a dance session was held for the girls of the class, during which the selection for the gymnasium cheer leading dance team took place. It was carried out in a joint lesson in the gym, boys and girls were divided into groups and assigned different tasks. The girls were warmed up and taught a short cheer-leading combination, which they then had to perform unaided. In this way, 10 girls were selected who would have a dance lesson once a week instead of physical education.

SITUATION ANALYSIS

SITUATION STRENGTHS IF TEACHERS HAVE A CLEAR ACTIVITY PLAN AND FOLLOW IT, IT IS POSSIBLE TO CONDUCT A PHYSICAL EDUCATION LESSON CREATIVELY. BY COMBINING DANCE WITH SPORTS, THE STUDENTS WILL GET COMPLETE PHYSICAL EDUCATION, LEARN TO WORK AS A TEAM, DEVELOP MEMORY, CREATIVITY, AND DEVELOP LEADERSHIP COMPETENCE. OBSERVING THE ENTHUSIASM OF THE STUDENTS WHILE LEARNING AND PERFORMING A DANCE COMBINATION, IT CAN BE SAID THAT BY COMBINING SIMPLE DANCE MOVEMENTS WITH WARM-UP, MUSCLE STRENGTHENING AND FLEXIBILITY EXERCISES, PHYSICAL ACTIVITY WILL BE ENCOURAGED, IT WILL BECOME A GOOD WAY TO STRENGTHEN THE BODY, GAIN SELF-CONFIDENCE, AND PERHAPS STAGE EXPERIENCE.

WEAKNESSES OF THE SITUATION THE TEACHER SHOULD BE PREPARED FOR A COMBINATION OF DANCES WHICH WOULD HELP TEST NOT ONLY THE STUDENTS' PHYSICAL ABILITIES, BUT ALSO THEIR MEMORY, THE ABILITY TO ADAPT TO UNEXPECTED SITUATIONS, WORK AS A TEAM, ETC. THEREFORE, THE COMBINATION SHOULD BE EASY ENOUGH FOR STUDENTS WITH NO DANCE EXPERIENCE TO PERFORM, BUT COMPLEX ENOUGH FOR EXPERIENCED STUDENTS TO DEMONSTRATE LEADERSHIP COMPETENCE. THE TEACHER MUST ALSO BE ABLE TO ADAPT TO DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTS, KNOW HOW TO MANAGE THE SITUATION (IF THE SELECTION OR THE DANCE LESSON IS HAPPENING IN A COMMON SPORTS HALL WITH OTHER STUDENTS), THE EMOTIONS OF THE STUDENTS AND TO MAINTAIN ORDER. OTHERWISE, STUDENTS MAY BE DISTRACTED, EXPERIENCING STRESS OR NEGATIVELY AFFECTING OTHER CLASSMATES.

POSSIBILITIES OF THE SITUATION WHEN CONDUCTING A DANCE LESSON AND CONDUCTING THE SELECTION, THE AUTHORITY OF THE DANCE TEACHER IN THE SCHOOL AND THE IMPORTANCE OF DANCE IN THE EDUCATIONAL PROCESS IS CONFIRMED. WHEN STARTING TO WORK IN A NEW SCHOOL, DANCE TEACHERS ARE FACED WITH THE CHALLENGE OF HOW TO PRESENT AND PROMOTE DANCE IN AN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION THAT HAD NO PREVIOUS DANCE CLASSES. COLLABORATION WITH TEACHERS OF DIFFERENT SUBJECTS, ORGANIZING INTER-CURRICULAR EVENTS AND ADAPTATION TO THE NEEDS OF STUDENTS (COMBINING PHYSICAL EDUCATION WITH DANCE) CAN BECOME AN OPPORTUNITY FOR DANCE TEACHERS TO FIND THEIR PLACE IN HIGH SCHOOLS, TO ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO BE INTERESTED IN MOVEMENT AND TO CONTRIBUTE TO AN ATTITUDE IN A CHANGING FORM OF EDUCATION.

SITUATION THREATS IT IS IMPORTANT FOR TEACHERS TO HAVE A CLEAR INTEGRATED LESSON PLAN, BECAUSE OF HOW THESE LESSONS WILL BE CONDUCTED, IN WHICH PREMISES AND HOW THEY WILL COOPERATE WITH ANOTHER TEACHER IN THE PROCESS OF EDUCATION AND ORGANIZING EVENTS. IT IS ALSO IMPORTANT NOT TO RELY ON STUDENTS' INITIAL ENTHUSIASM, BUT TO HAVE WAYS TO SUPPORT THEIR MOTIVATION. OTHERWISE, THE TEACHER'S DISORGANIZATION CAN HARM THEIR AUTHORITY. STUDENTS MAY LOSE INTEREST, NEGATIVELY AFFECT LESSONS, ETC. TEACHERS ARE RECOMMENDED TO CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT OF OPENNESS AND TRUST IN WHICH STUDENTS CAN EXPRESS THEIR THOUGHTS AND NEEDS.

SITUATION REFLECTION In order to integrate dance into physical education lessons, it is important to look into the history of the educational institution (whether there have been dance teachers, what style of dance they have taught, what events they have organized, etc.), to cooperate with other teachers in order to find a suitable way for dance integration. In this case, the teachers had noticed the students' need to perform cheer leading dance routines during sports matches, which made it easier to adapt the lesson plan and integrate dance. During future lessons, the goal should be to learn and perform a new combination during a gymnasium event (during a sports or cultural event), forming a permanent cheer-leading team that could represent the gymnasium. This situation reflects the role of today's dance teachers in general education institutions. If the institution has not had a permanent dance teacher, the new employee must communicate with colleagues, be interested in existing needs and gaps in order to find a way to integrate dance into the educational process. It is also important to be able to adapt to the needs of the school and students, to learn new elements of dance styles, so that dance integration would be successful. Therefore, a dance teacher must have openness, good organizational skills, leadership and critical thinking.
