SITUATION ANALYSIS
SITUATION STRENGTHS
During the lesson, the children were unbalanced: some were talking among themselves, others were not paying attention, and a conflict was brewing between two boys (they started pushing each other). The teacher demonstrated the following methods of discipline: · When he saw one boy pushing another, he came over and separated them and asked the pushing boy if he would like someone to come and push him. After saying this, he asked the other boy to take five steps back and keep his distance throughout the lesson. · After asking the children several times not to talk and to concentrate, the teacher sat down at the side of the classroom and remained silent. The children also fell silent. He asked, "Why am I doing this?" He waited for the children's answers. Then he said: "If you make noise, I will sit and be silent for the whole lesson, and you will stand in silence." Your choice: do we continue the lesson or keep quiet?” The children said they wanted to continue dancing. The lesson continued and the students patiently completed the tasks. · A group of boys did not focus on the slow waltz steps, the same boys continued to disagree with each other. The teacher said, "The whole group will dance again because X and Y are angry." The boys calmed down, but to enforce discipline, the whole group danced again afterwards. · During the girls turn to dance, one of the conflicting boys was invited to sit next to the teacher. The teacher said a humorous phrase to the children. During the girls' dance, he talked to the boy about discipline and respectful behavior. The conflicted boys danced alone until then. To stabilize their attention, the teacher paired them with girls. While dancing with them, the boys got into a fight.
WEAKNESSES OF THE SITUATION
Conflicts arising during the lesson can move to another space. This makes it important to resolve brewing disagreements immediately, during class. Although the teacher was able to keep the children's attention, he must maintain a balance between strictness and leniency, emphasize that he will not tolerate disrespectful behavior during the lesson. This could be said to the whole class so that all students know the rules of behavior during the lesson. It is also important to be able to choose appropriate methods of discipline. Some children may take a harsh tone in a sensitive, personal way, while others need more severe discipline. It is important to notice the characteristics of children and to choose discipline methods according to the individual character of the student.
POSSIBILITIES OF THE SITUATION After the lesson, the teacher can talk to the conflicting boys individually to find out the origin of their conflict, to give his assessment of the situation. If the conflicts continues, the boys can be moved to different sides of the hall during the lesson, and after the lessons, their conflict can be discussed with the class leader. The school can also organize an event that discusses respectful behavior during lessons, conflict and bullying topics, encouraging angry children to discuss conflict situations and how they can be resolved.
SITUATION THREATS If children are not properly disciplined and if teachers do not talk to them about discipline and respect, their conflict can become aggressive, turn into bullying, and be one of the causes of emotional and psychological problems. Therefore, it is important to notice children's distractions and pushes (even if they are playful) in time and react accordingly so that their behavior does not deteriorate.
SITUATION REFLECTION During the lesson, the students repeated the steps of a slow waltz and learned a combination of Cha Cha Cha steps. During it, the teacher demonstrated different methods of disciplining the children, which helped to focus attention and stopped a possible conflict between two boys. It was noticeable that at the beginning of the lesson, the children were out of balance: some were talking to each other, others were not paying attention. After the warm-up, the two boys started to push each other, a conflict was about to start. The teacher used several methods for the class as a disciplinary action (repeating the combination several times, "silence break"), and several others for the aforementioned boys (separation, performing a dance in pairs with girls, individual conversation). It is important to notice children's states and disrespectful behavior as soon as possible, because imbalances or maturing conflicts that arise during the lesson can move to another space and have unpleasant consequences. In addition, it is important to choose appropriate methods of discipline, because more sensitive children may take a harsh tone painfully, while others need more severe discipline. It is important to choose discipline methods according to the child's character. In order to prevent further conflicts, the teacher can talk to the conflicting boys individually after the lesson to find out the origin of their conflict, to present their assessment of the situation. If the conflicts continue, during the lesson the boys can be moved to different sides of the hall, after the lessons their conflict can be discussed with the head of the class or another school specialist, for example, a psychologist. If children are not properly disciplined and are not talked to about discipline and respect, their conflict can become aggressive, turn into bullying, and be the cause of emotional and psychological problems. Therefore, it is important to notice children's distractions and push-ups in time and react accordingly so that their behavior does not deteriorate.
